Manitoba Liberals Release Bold Climate Plan for Green Growth and Renewal

May 3, 2019

Winnipeg - Manitoba Liberals launched their plan for Green Growth & Renewal, a plan they say will put the province at the forefront of fighting climate change. It will create good jobs by using technology and nature to bring Manitoba's emissions into balance by 2030.

Manitoba Liberal Leader and MLA for St. Boniface, Dougald Lamont, says the plan will make our province carbon neutral by 2030. This means Manitoba will reverse and absorb as much as it emits in 11 years.

"The Manitoba Liberal plan will create thousands of good jobs in clean fuels and energy; expanding wilderness and making it easier for people to save money by going green," said Lamont.

The Manitoba Liberals have four major steps in their plan:

  • Return to the negotiating table with the Federal Government in order to take back control of Manitoba's climate plan
  • Invest to make Manitoba a leader in clean energy, including carbon-neutral fuels to make existing vehicles greener
  • Reverse pollution with more wilderness, wetlands, and agricultural practices to let nature absorb more CO2
  • Make it easier for Manitobans to go green with investments in green retrofits, public transit, and more

Canada's Changing Climate Report (CCCR) commissioned by Environment and Climate Change Canada stated that Canada, on average, is experiencing warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world.

"We have been talking about Climate Change for more than 30 years and every time someone has tried to inch forward and act, Conservatives have rolled back progress. We have a moral obligation to act on this and Manitoba will prove that it can be done," said Lamont.
