MB Liberals Repeat Call for Takeover of Risky For-Profit Seniors' Homes: Call for Sweeping Changes to PC Pandemic Response

TREATY ONE TERRITORY, WINNIPEG, MB - In response to a horrific scene at the Maples PCH, Manitoba Liberals called for a series of measures to respond to a Covid-19 crisis that is now resulting in system breakdowns in personal care homes and across Manitoba's health system.

According to accounts, the Maples PCH called for multiple ambulances, only to find the facility massively understaffed and some patients dead.

"This is heartbreaking for families and even worse, it was preventable," said Dr. Jon Gerrard, Manitoba Liberal Health Critic. "We need immediate action and immediate resources to fix this."

The Manitoba Liberal Caucus - Dougald Lamont, Dr. Jon Gerrard and Cindy Lamoureux, say the province needs sweeping and immediate changes to its pandemic response.

They are calling for:

• An immediate Provincial takeover of Parkview and Maples PCHs, as well as other Revera Homes affected by outbreaks

• The federal government, Red Cross, and military emergency services should all be considered

• All patients need immediate rapid tests. Those who are negative should be removed to independent hotel rooms, supported by staff

Short Term

• Take the politics out of the pandemic, by letting Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) lead the pandemic response, working with Public Health, with the involvement of multiple parties

• An immediate, hard lockdown for two weeks, with income and revenue supports for individuals and businesses

"We can't have Premier and this Health Minister making the calls anymore. Having them in charge of pandemic response is like letting politicians pick and choose which 911 call gets answered," said Lamont. "The Premier's job should be limited to signing cheques, and if he won't do that, the Federal Government should step in with funds and send the Province the bill."

Manitoba Liberals also repeated their call for a public inquiry.

• The province must call an independent Inquiry into the Second Wave Response to examine the catastrophic failures of planning and preparedness

• Criminal charges must be on the table for negligence in failing to prepare and massively mishandling the second wave

"We still have time to change course, as well as to learn from the horrific mistakes made by this government to date," said Dr. Jon Gerrard, Manitoba Liberal Health Critic. "The time for that change is now. We need to mobilize vast resources to crush the curve."
